        ‘BOARD’ GAMES HELP

         RELIEVE ‘BOREDOM’

toysFor those of you wishing to be free of the dreaded condition known as  “boredom” there are always “Board” games (‘slightly’ sorry for the pun !)   Also discovered, was a series of 49 small and carved painted stones that were found at the 5,000-year-old Başur Höyük burial mound in southeast Turkey. These appear to be the among the earliest gaming pieces ever found. Similar discoveries have been made in Syria and Iraq. They point to board games possibly originating in the Fertile Crescent of north Africa. The Fertile Crescent is comprised of regions around the Nile, Tigris, and Euphrates Rivers in the Middle East. Interestingly, this is the same region that invented booze and papyrus, breath mints, and calendars. Of course, these are also ‘required items’ when planning your game night with friends, or family, who enjoy the playfulness of games, just like you.

Early Dice

toys

(5000 BC)

Most people don’t realize many  games were developed during pre-historic times. Research informs us that humans invented and enjoyed games centuries before we had written a language. The very first game turned out to be,

(you guessed it !) Dice !

Cleverly, other early origin dice games were created by painting a single side of flat sticks. These sticks would be tossed in unison and the number of painted sides showing, would determine your “roll” score. Mesopotamian dice were made from a variety of materials, including carved knuckle bones, wood, painted stones, and turtle shells.

Board Games Become a Royal Pastime

(3100 BC)

Board games also were popular among the pharaohs in Ancient Egypt. Further investigation revealed the game of Senet. In a fascinating twist of fate, this game was discovered in pre-dynastic, and in many First Dynasty burials. Senet is featured in several illustrations from Ancient Egyptian tombs. By the time the ‘New Kingdom’ evolved, in Egypt (1550–1077 BC), it had become a ‘talisman’ for the journey of ‘the dead’ to travel to ‘the afterlife’.

Egyptians were strong believers in the concept of “fate”. The important element of luck, the game of Senet, was strongly tied to this idea. Players believed that a successful competitor was under the protection of the pantheon of gods, Ra, Thoth, and sometimes Osiris. Consequently, Senet boards were often placed in the grave site alongside other useful objects for the dangerous journey through the afterlife. The game is even mentioned in Chapter XVII of the Book of the Dead.

Scholars now still debate how the game is played. The Senet board has a grid of 30 squares, arranged in three rows of ten. There are two sets of pawns. Historians made educated guesses as to the actual rules of game. A modern version is now available. They were adopted by different companies, which make sets for sale today.

The Landlord’s Game

(1903)

You may not have heard of The Landlord’s Game. It was invented by a woman named Lizzie Magie, one of America’s very first board game designers. The game board consisted of a square track, with a row of properties around the perimeter, that players could buy. The game board had four railroads, two utilities, a jail, and a corner named “Labor Upon Mother Earth Produces Wages,” which earned players $100 each time they passed it… Sound familiar?

Magie invented and patented The Landlord’s Game in 1904. She also designed the game to be a practical demonstration of ‘land grabbing’, with all its usual outcomes and consequences. She based the game on the economic principles of ‘Georgism‘, a system proposed by economist and journalist, Henry George, with the object of demonstrating how rents enrich property owners and impoverish tenants.

Unfortunately, she knew some people would find the landlord/tenant process hard to understand. She thought it was important to learn why this happened and what could be done about it. She thought if Georgist ideas were put into the playful form of a game, they might also be easier to demonstrate to game players. Magie also hoped that when played by children, the game would provoke their natural suspicion of unfairness, and that they might carry this awareness into adulthood.

Monopoly

In 1935 Magie sold her patent for The Landlords Game to Parker Brothers, which is now, what we know as Monopoly. This game launched Parker Brothers’ enormous financial success. Interestingly, Magie’s game was originally rejected by Parker Brothers. Later, they change their minds once they discovered they could be successful with Monopoly. They went on to produce Risk, Sorry, Trivial Pursuit, and several more very popular games. Lizzie Magie sold her original patent of the original game for $500.

        Board Gaming Becomes a

        Yearly World Wide Event

(2013)

So, let’s circle back to one of the biggest catalysts for the recent explosion in board gaming popularity. It is known as TableTop. A web series about board games was created by Wil Wheaton and Felicia Day. In each episode, Wil Wheaton plays board games with popular TV and web personalities.

Table Top on Television

TableTop started out as a show on the Geek & Sundry, You- Tube Channel. It quickly became the show’s most popular series. The original concept for Tabletop was that Wil Wheaton (an avid board gamer) would review the board games on the show. He proposed that the best way to demonstrate the games and exhibit how much fun they were, was to simply play them in front of the viewing audience. The show was a great win for the television industry. The rest is history.

Tabletop was so successful that by the third season they ‘crowdfunded’ a campaign to make the company independent. Their target was $500,000 profitability. They nearly tripled that amount of money. They recently announced they would use the additional money to launch a similar web series titled “Titan’s Grave: The Ashes of Vulcan”.

Titan’s Grave, a multi-episode show, focused on a single role-playing board game, was featured. Geek & Sundry also teamed up with Green Ronin Publishing, creators of several RPG titles, including Dragon Age. Thus, was created a new game engine that they used to power their RPG game.

Table Top Games

TableTop became a resonating force in the gaming community. They focused on introducing games to new players, who still misunderstand the modern version of board gaming. A lot of people still think of Monopoly and Risk, when they think of board games. TableTop’s popularity started to shift the public’s perception. The show inspired the featured board games to skyrocket in sales. Tsuro was featured on this successful T.V. show. The publisher exhausted all of the game reserves that they had in stock, at that time. The demand was so great that the game was sold out and became unavailable in Europe while supplies were replenished. As production tried to cope with US demand, the Game manufacturers dubbed this newest international game appeal, “The Wheaton Effect”.

You tube

A popular YOU TUBE channel was deeply involved with a yearly worldwide event. In 2013 Wil and Felicia held International Tabletop Day and they played several games live with folks from previous episodes. The next year, the event spiraled into a worldwide celebration, with events in over 80 countries. A lot of game stores, from all over the world, announced various events and promotions as part of their participation. Amazingly, as a result, Board gaming officially became a worldwide, cultural phenomenon.
